• All of the above species were photographed in England with the exception of the Palmate Newt which was found in Wales. The Common Wall Lizard illustrated here was photographed near Ventnor on the Isle of Wight, where a colony of the green-backed form of this variable species has been known to exist for some decades. The origins of this colony are unclear and whilst the lizards are likely to have been introduced it is possible that they could belong to a relict native population. Some other colonies have been artificially established in the British Isles and some of these have persisted for a number of years.
