GREEN LIZARD
Lacerta viridis
- These portraits of Green
Lizards Lacerta viridis
(les Lézards vert)
were taken in southern Brittany (the brighter green
example shown in the middle two photographs) and near
Cantobre in the South of France. The appearance of the
juvenile in the first photograph is more subdued than
that of either of the adults illustrated in the remaining
pictures and young Green Lizards could easily be presumed
to belong to an entirely different species. The darker
colours may help the young lizards to absorb heat more
effectively, an important advantage if they wish to avoid
unnecessary exposure to predators. When sunbathing on
bracken the spotted pattern breaks up the outline of the
adult lizards, making them very difficult to see from any
distance.
