• The European, or Common Wall Lizard is widely distributed in Northern Europe. The eponym is entirely appropriate, as these animals have a very strong association with human habitation and they are often seen basking on walls. Differentiation between this variably marked species and other European Wall Lizards is difficult - there are 14 species and many named subspecies. However, the photographed animals are presumed to be Podarcis muralis as they were photographed in France. Photographs of individuals from the introduced British colony on the south coast of the Isle of Wight closely resemble an Italian subspecies and illustrations from this population are shown on Amphibians and Reptiles 2 and 5.
