- This sequence of photographs
shows a female Hazel Leaf-roller Weevil
receiving the attention of two males. Both are presumably
intent on mating with her (although neither is actually
doing so) and there is quite a lot of posturing going on
between the rivals involving much touching of antennae
and deliberate articulation (?clicking) of neck joints.
It was not evident from watching this behaviour whether
this movement produces any actual sound but the beetles
certainly appeared to be signalling to one another. It is
speculated that the extended length of the head of this
insect may be associated with this activity. The female
seems to be completely unconcerned as she is merely
continuing her leaf-rolling activities.
- The BBC 'Home
Planet' programme has recently
linked into this page following a discussion about the Hazel
Nut Weevil Curculio nucum.
This is actually an entirely different species and
information about this beetle may be obtained on: http://www.inra.fr/Internet/Produits/HYPPZ/RAVAGEUR/6curnuc.htm. 'Home
Planet' visitors to this page are, of
course, very welcome to take a look around this site
before following the link!
