HEATH
TIGER BEETLE Cicindela sylvatica
- These photographs of rare Heath
Tiger Beetles were taken immediately prior to
and just after a sudden burst of activity as the female
spotted an (unidentifiable) item of prey and went off in
hot pursuit, with the male hanging on firmly with his
jaws. Fortunately this action was captured on mini-DV
film, but the speed of the chase was so great that the
individual frames would be too blurred for inclusion here
as captured stills. Although the male was firmly attached
during the pursuit the beetles were not actually mating
and they separated shortly after the female had consumed
her meal.
