____________ Beetles 17 - Cardinal and
Lily Beetles

BLACK-HEADED
CARDINAL BEETLE Pyrochroa coccinea

SCARLET LILY BEETLE Lilioceris
lilii
- Two superficially similar
red beetles are shown here. However, the Black-headed
Cardinal Beetle (seen immediately prior to
take-off) is an uncommon and specialised ancient woodland
indicator species whereas the significantly smaller and
undeniably handsome Scarlet Lily Beetle
is a relatively recently imported and unpopular garden
pest. This brilliantly coloured species first arrived in
the UK during World War 2 although significant range
expansion from the original colony in Surrey only began
to occur towards the end of the 20th Century, presumably
in response to a warming climate.
