COLORADO BEETLE Leptinotarsa
decemlineata
- Handsome it may be, but the
Colorado Beetle poses a potentially
serious threat to the potato crop in the UK and it is
therefore necessary to report any sightings to DEFRA
without hesitation. These insects are common on the
Continent and it is therefore highly likely that they
might be accidentally introduced in produce (the beetles
are most likely to be intercepted on imported parsley,
salad produce and potatoes [DEFRA]). At least the
distinctive markings make this pest very easy to
recognise. The beetles should be collected and the
instructions given on the following webpages: http://www,defra.gov.uk/planth/pestnote/colorado.htm and the linked: http://www.defra.gov.uk/planth/pestnote/col.pdf should be followed. This
individual was photographed in the South of France.
