- Opportunities for the
undisturbed close observation of birds are comparatively
rare, but for a period of about 45 minutes this
delightful Sanderling continued to
behave as if entirely untroubled by the presence of the
nearby photographer. These small waders are sometimes
compared to clockwork toys as they scuttle along at
breakneck speed and this is an apt description indeed.
Had this individual been part of a flock then this
tolerance of humans would have been far less likely. The
contrast with longer-legged relatives (see Birds 34) is striking, but each wader
species is designed to exploit a non-competitive niche -
a ploy which serves these birds well.
