- Three Bitterns
were spotted at Barn Elms Wildfowl and Wetland Trust
Centre during January 2002, the first records for central
London for over 100 years. As there are a number of
favoured wintering locations around the Capital and this
site has been reconstructed with reed beds it was
probably just a matter of time before one would appear,
but this is nonetheless an exciting find in such an urban
area. The Bittern shown here was photographed on the
River Colne on a bitterly cold midwinter's day several
years earlier. This individual spent a number of hours
out in the open and in full view of a small number of
lucky birdwatchers.
- Little Egrets have spread
their range and they have recently bred in the London
area for the first time. The birds in the first
photograph were seen in southern England and the second
picture was taken in Brittany. The yellow feet are used
to disturb small fish when fishing.
- Cattle Egrets are also
likely to colonise the British Isles if their
distribution range continues to expand. The
photograph on this page was taken in northern Spain.
