Parakeets are a recent accidental introduction
to the UK, having initially escaped from captivity. The
source of their eponym is just evident on the male bird
in the first photograph and much more clearly visible in
the final (cropped) portrait. These birds occur naturally
in several African countries and parts of Asia (as
several different sub-species) and they are intelligent,
resourceful and adaptable creatures, being tolerant of a
wide climatic range. This species has also established
feral populations elsewhere, for example in the USA, and
they are clearly well equipped to survive away from their
native habitat. It is questionable whether the artificial
spread of any alien species is welcome and there are
plenty of earlier disasters, e.g. Grey Squirrels and
Coypu in the UK or Cane Toads in Australia. However,
there is little doubt about the entertainment value of
these highly active, noisy and colourful birds as they
are far more conspicuous and easily observed than most
native birds in Britain. A quite substantial breeding
population has built up in suburban London and the Home
Counties during the past couple of decades and these
birds are clearly here to stay!
