TORTOISE BUG Eurygaster
testitudinaria

TORTOISE
BUG Eurygaster maura
- These very similar species
are most readily separated by the use of entomological
keys, the best of which has been produced by Graham
Collins for use in Roger Hawkins' excellent 'Shieldbugs
of Surrey'. The most visible differences
are in the shape of the central lobes of the head (note
the central groove visible in the first photograph of Eurygaster
testitudinaria that ends in a slight
concavity in this species but not in E. maura).
There are also subtle differences in the lengths of their
second antennal segments relative to those of the third
(slightly longer relative to the third segment in E.
maura) but these are difficult details to see
without significant magnification and closer examination
of the reproductive organs by expert heteropterists may
be needed to clinch an identification to species.
