___ Bugs 9 - Gorse Shieldbugs,
Green Shieldbugs

GORSE SHIELDBUG Piezodorus
lituratus

GREEN SHIELDBUG Palomena
prasina

GREEN SHIELDBUG Palomena
prasina
- Two very common shieldbug
species are shown. The Green Shieldbug
is frequently to be found in gardens where it utilises a
wide variety of foodplants, whereas the superficially
similar Gorse Shieldbug feeds on Gorse
(see photographs), Broom and
other related leguminous species. Following the recent
establishment of breeding colonies of Southern
Green Shieldbugs Nezara viridula
(see Bugs 10 and Bugs
24) in some parts of the UK there may soon be
a chance of confusion with adults of this species too,
although the distinctive nymphs are easy to separate.
