The above
portrait reached the semi-finals of the BG Wildlife
Photographer of the Year Competition, 2002
- A selection of close-up
photographs are shown of this common and striking migrant
species. 'Red Admiral' is actually a
corruption of 'Red Admirable'.
These images were obtained in November 2001 during an
unseasonably warm spell of weather. There is now
significant evidence to confirm that these beautiful
insects are now able to survive British winters by
hibernating as adults and that they are therefore genuine
all year round residents. The typical nymphalid 'brush
feet' are very evident in the last photograph.
These modified legs are smaller in males than females.
Although useless for walking, they are covered with
numerous large scales and have a sensory function which
enables the butterflies to detect suitable nectar
sources.
