Butterflies
19 - Nymphalidae - Knapweed Fritillaries 1
KNAPWEED
FRITILLARY Melitaea phoebe
- The final image of the underside
of a Knapweed Fritillary has been taken
from a captured mini-DV still (see Butterflies 12 for an illustration of the
upperside of this same butterfly) and the remaining
pictures have been copied from transparencies. These
beautiful fritillaries are common in the Dordogne area of
southern France where these images were taken. There are
several similar species which are difficult to separate
in the field, or even from photographs! The origin of the
common name is fairly evident from the first three
pictures.
