MARBLED WHITE Melanargia

- The above series of
captured mini-DV stills of Marbled Whites
was taken during perfect weather conditions with very
little wind interference - such a rarity in the UK!
Marbled Whites are not actually 'Whites' at all,
belonging to the Satyridae (Browns). The
photogenicity of this species is often enhanced by its
choice of nectar sources, which here include Field
Scabious Knautia arvensis,
Bramble Rubus fruticosus
agg. and Pyramidal Orchid Anacamptis
pyramidalis. Marbled Whites frequently act
as host to a small red parasitic mite and an example is
seen here in the fourth photograph just behind the
butterfly's eye.
