Butterflies 30 - Satyridae 2

SCOTCH ARGUS Erebia
aethiops

DRYAD Minois dryas

LARGE WALL BROWN Lasiommata maera
f. adastra (f)
- These Satyrid (Brown)
butterflies were photographed in the South of France. DNA
studies suggest that members of the genus Erebia
are currently undergoing very active evolution and there
are many similarly marked (and therefore confusing)
species in Continental Europe. In the UK the Scotch
Argus is a northern specialist and it is quite common
in the Scottish Highlands and Lake District - and also
easy to identify as there are no other similarly marked
butterflies of the same size. The Dryad is a
very dark woodland species with distinctive blue-centred
eyespots. The adastra form of the female Large
Wall Brown is found in Southern France and it bears a
much closer resemblance to the Wall Brown than the
type species Lasiommata maera maera. The
Dryad and Large Wall Brown are absent from the UK.
