Orthopteroids 23 - Egyptian Grasshoppers

EGYPTIAN GRASSHOPPER Anacridium

EGYPTIAN GRASSHOPPER Anacridium
aegyptium (SHED
SKIN POST-ECDYSIS)
- These large and rather
handsome locusts were photographed in Mediterranean
France. The eye-stripes and the number of creases in the
pronotum are useful identifiers as similar species like
Migratory Locusts may be found in this area. The insect
in the middle photograph is just about to shed its final
skin and the third picture shows an intact skin from
another individual following ecdysis. It is probable that
most of these shed skins will be eaten after this process
as they contain useful nutrients.
