Hymenoptera 15 - Sphecid Wasps

- This very large and
somewhat intimidating Sphecid Wasp was
found in Tuscany (Toscana) in Italy, initially making its
presence known by landing right next to the
photographer's foot. Despite this proximity it was
sufficiently elusive to prevent more than two rapidly
taken photographs to be obtained during the next hour or
so. Although hunting behaviour was not observed it is
strongly suspected that the prey would have consisted of
bush crickets. The (black) leg colour would appear to be
wrong for Sphex maxillosus, so
any local knowledge from a hymenopterist working in the
area would be very welcome. The fearsome mandibles and
leg bristles can be seen to good effect in the second
photograph and it is presumed that the armoury would be
completed with a sting at the other end for paralysing
prey items.
