HORNET
Vespa crabro
- The substantial antennae of the
male Saxon Wasp and Hornet
are clearly visible in the first and fourth pictures. A Common
Wasp has captured a small jumping spider in
the second photograph. Social wasps are sometimes caught
in the webs of Garden Spiders Araneus
diadematus (although they often escape) so
there was probably some payback involved. The remaining
images are of the Hornet, comfortably the largest and
most impressive of the British species. The prey item in
the final picture was a Honey Bee, ruthlessly
ambushed whilst feeding on Ivy Hedera
helix flowers.
