Hymenoptera 22 - Small Carpenter Bees

CARPENTER BEE Ceratina cyanea (f)

SMALL
CARPENTER BEE Ceratina cyanea
(f, m)
- Male Small
Carpenter Bees Ceratina cyanea
possess characteristic white marks on their faces and
this feature is (just) visible in the second photograph.
These rare bees were found feeding on Field
Scabious Knautia arvensis.
The specific name refers to the blue metallic appearance.
With thanks to Jeremy Early for confirming this
identification. Jeremy's photographs of both sexes of
this species may be found on one of the colour plates in 'Bees
of Surrey'. This bee, the only British
member of this genus, is a county specialty and there is
a very thorough account of its biology in this book.
