• These photographs were taken in France at a number of different locations. Some were taken at high altitude in the Haute-Pyrénées. All of the Paper Wasp photographs illustrate thermoregulation of the nest by these handsome and non-aggressive insects. This is achieved by the wasps placing themselves in strategic positions and rapidly fanning the cells of the nests with their wings. Polistes dominulus has bred in the UK recently.The massive Violet Carpenter Bee may also have started to colonise the UK as several nests have now been reported. These spectacular insects will be a welcome addition to the British fauna.
