- These splendid hawk moths were
found in France. The nocturnal Spurge and
Small Elephant Hawk Moths were
attracted to a light at night.
- The Hummingbird
and Broad-bordered Bee Hawk Moths are
diurnal and they are illustrated here doing what they do
best, namely hovering at flowers and feeding on nectar
with their long probosces. There are slight differences
in the feeding techniques of these two species - the
Broad-bordered Bee Hawk Moth steadies itself by placing
its front feet on the flower as it feeds whereas the
Hummingbird Hawk Moth makes no contact. Hummingbird Hawk
Moths appeared in the UK in exceptional numbers during
the hot summer of 2003 and again during 2006. These new
digital photographs were taken in Brittany using natural
light and a high shutter speed at high ISO settings.
