ELEPHANT HAWK MOTH LARVA Deilephila
elpenor
- These digital photographs show a
splendid Elephant Hawk Moth larva,
allegedly so named because of its resemblance to an
elephants trunk. This larva, found in Brittany, was
picked up by the photographer in order to demonstrate the
use an effective defensive ploy, namely the expansion of
the front end behind the head, which enlarges the
eyespots and deters predators from making an attack. The
larva may also swing from side to side - in a very
trunk-like manner! See Moths 14 for pictures of the adult
insect.
