- The above captured mini-DV
stills illustrate a splendid Privet Hawk Moth
which was discovered resting on a telegraph pole by a
busy main road in Dorset. This huge moth (by British
standards) was moved to a nearby wall for its own safety
as some of the feet were becoming contaminated by sticky
tar which had melted in the hot weather. The moth hovered
for a brief period right in front of the video camera
prior to settling, giving the photographer a wonderful
opportunity to film it in flight. The wing beats were
shallow and far too fast for the camera to be able to
freeze the movement in any of the captured frames.
Unfortunately the photographer's SLR was only equipped
with a standard 50mm lens, so it was not possible to
obtain any magnified images on transparency film.
