• The above photographs illustrate a few of the numerous moth species which may be found in the Dordogne area of southern France. All had been attracted to light during the month of August 2001. Some of these moths are regularly found in Britain and others have been seen as migrants.

• The Scarce Merveille du Jour was filmed against a background of lichens on an oak tree trunk and this captured mini-DV still shows just how effectively this insect's camouflage works. From a distance the moth becomes virtually invisible. This beautiful creature is included on the English Nature Species Recovery Plan Priority List.

• The Buff-Tip looks uncannily like a freshly snapped twig, particularly when resting on the ground. This large moth seems to have an unfortunate (and usually fatal) attraction to car headlights.
