MYRMARACHNE SPIDER Myrmarachne

ORB-WEB SPIDER Araniella

CROSS, OR
GARDEN SPIDER Araneus diadematus (f)
- A miscellaneous selection
of spiders is shown here. Nursery-web spider
(Pisauridae) females are commonly observed
running on the ground carrying their egg sacs. Myrmarachne
formicaria (Salticidae) is
a very convincing ant-mimic. Also shown are a couple of
common orb-web spiders (Araneidae). Arianella
cucurbitina inhabits trees and it is well
camouflaged against a background of foliage. The prey
captured by the Cross Spider may be
readily identified as a Harlequin Ladybird Harmonia
axyridis as the markings may be seen
clearly through the strands of the web. Any
contribution to the natural control of this invasive
alien beetle is very welcome! This familiar spider
is abundant everywhere, becoming very obvious in
many gardens in late summer.
